ETF Unusual Activity at Mid Session

Total option volume tops 6.1 million contracts as the typical names top the action in indexes and exchange-traded products, optionMONSTER’s data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 586,000 options traded, 387,000 of which are puts. (Apple alone tops that action with 805,000, among volume in individual names).

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 340,000 contracts trading, 192,000 of them puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) is next on the volume list with 240,000. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) options have changed hands 185,000 times. All of them are seeing more puts than calls, but the ratio is less than 2 to 1.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) has 109,000 options traded, with calls outpacing puts. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 88,000 contracts as calls outmumber puts by more than 3 to 1 on the back of one large call spread.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short Term Futures Fund (VXX) has 65,000 options traded, with puts outpacing calls as usual.
